SEO MIGRATION PLAYBOOK
A WooCommerce to Shopify SEO migration must preserve editorial content and taxonomy relationships alongside products. Inventory WordPress pages, posts, media, product archives and extension-generated destinations before assigning target URLs.

WORKED EXAMPLE
Illustrative scenario. This is an implementation example, not a reported Fuel client result.
A WooCommerce store has custom product permalinks, editorial buying guides and extension-generated variation URLs. The Shopify import preserves product names but omits compatibility tables stored in custom fields. If the migration team tests only product counts, the loss is invisible. Protect useful answers and inbound destinations alongside catalog records, and decide where each custom field will appear in the new storefront.
Illustrative mapping: /product/pump-a/ can map to /products/pump-a, while an installation guide requires its own appropriate content destination. Do not redirect a useful guide to a product solely because the guide mentioned that item.
Check old editorial and product links, images, rendered rich content and collection membership. Verify product identifiers and offer information after import, then test the purchase journey separately from redirect success.
IMPLEMENTATION SEQUENCE
01
02
Assign each useful field to a destination component or an intentional retirement decision. Compare product and collection meaning before mapping redirects.
03
Check sample specifications, selected variants, images, internal links and source redirects. A matching product count is not proof of equivalent customer information.
DIAGNOSE BEFORE CHANGING
Record the existing product and taxonomy permalink rules. Identify shortcodes, custom fields and builder content that a catalog export will not preserve. Compare useful category, brand and attribute archives with the planned collections.
The handoff should name the affected URL pattern, the observed output and the component that owns it. Include a working comparison page when possible. This keeps an individual content edit separate from a template rule that affects many destinations.
| Area | What to compare | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Editorial content | List posts, guides and landing pages alongside product exports. | Choose target destinations for commercially useful nonproduct content. |
| Product relationships | Compare categories, tags, variations and compatibility information. | Preserve the useful relationships in target collections and product fields. |
| Plugin responsibilities | Inventory redirects, schema and metadata generated by WordPress plugins. | Assign each responsibility in the target implementation. |
| Workstream | Evidence | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory | Combine valuable landing pages, linked URLs, images, documents and current navigation. | Define which assets need preservation, replacement or retirement. |
| Destination mapping | Map each changed URL to the closest relevant new destination. | Avoid blanket redirects to the homepage or an unrelated category. |
| Content parity | Compare useful body content, specifications, media and internal links. | Make intentional changes explicit and recover accidental omissions. |
| Technical output | Check responses, redirects, canonical URLs, robots directives and sitemaps. | Resolve conflicting staging and production settings. |
| Conversion continuity | Test forms, checkout, phone links and analytics. | Preserve measurable business tasks through launch. |
| Launch ownership | Assign launch checks, issue owners and rollback criteria. | Monitor critical paths immediately and affected search groups over time. |
A WooCommerce store relies on buying guides to attract demand and link to product categories. Exporting only products preserves the catalog but loses the discovery system around it. Map the guides and their links, then confirm the new templates still contain the comparison tables and compatibility information that made them useful.
This is an illustrative planning scenario. Use a real URL inventory and documented business requirements to make the final mapping decisions.
Record the old URL, target URL, reason for the mapping, expected status and the owner of any exception. Test the complete chain from the old destination to the final page. Check for loops, unnecessary hops, irrelevant targets and destinations that are themselves unavailable or excluded.
Preserving a URL is useful only if the resulting page still serves its purpose. Compare the visible content, relevant product set, internal links and conversion path. Do not accept a successful response code as proof of content parity.
Before release, agree on the rollback threshold, responsible team and communication channel. At launch, verify the critical URLs, indexing controls, sitemaps, internal navigation and business actions. Retest representative edge cases, not just the homepage.
After launch, inspect the affected landing-page groups and retain the old-to-new mapping in reports. A new URL may not be processed immediately. Investigate technical failures promptly while distinguishing them from search processing, seasonality and unrelated campaign changes.
They can, but combining changes makes diagnosis harder. Record which URLs, content, templates and tracking behaviors change so the team can investigate issues.
Only when that category is a genuinely relevant replacement. Blanket redirects sacrifice relevance and may produce poor user experiences.
Treat redirects as a durable part of the move. Follow current search-engine guidance and keep useful old links working, especially where external references remain.

Use the current documentation alongside the checks above. Controls can vary by platform version, plan, theme and installed extensions.
A QUESTION WORTH ANSWERING CLEARLY
When the collection serves the same useful buying task, that can be an appropriate destination. Confirm assortment, content and intent rather than matching names alone. Categories without a genuine counterpart need a deliberate consolidation or retirement decision, not an automatic redirect to an unrelated collection.
