SEO MIGRATION PLAYBOOK
A Magento to Shopify SEO migration must translate product paths, categories, facets and store views into the target catalog model. Preserve valuable destinations and buying information rather than assuming a product export represents the whole website.

WORKED EXAMPLE
Illustrative scenario. This is an implementation example, not a reported Fuel client result.
A Magento catalog uses category-path product URLs and several store views. Shopify introduces a different route structure and product model. Mapping only direct product URLs leaves valuable historical category paths uncovered; mechanically matching locale prefixes can also send shoppers to markets without the same item. Build the migration map from observed source URLs and intended buying tasks, with explicit handling for configurable products and market exceptions.
Illustrative mapping: both /equipment/pump-a.html and /pump-a.html may resolve to /products/pump-a when they represent one product. A valuable filtered application page may need its own collection; sending it to an unrelated product loses the selection task.
Test all recorded legacy paths to relevant final destinations without chains. Compare category guidance, product specifications, locale behavior and mobile purchase entry. Include discontinued products and missing market equivalents as explicit exceptions.
IMPLEMENTATION SEQUENCE
01
Include direct paths, category paths, URL suffixes, store views and important linked legacy addresses. Distinguish duplicate routes from different products or localized offers.
02
Map product families, collections and market equivalents before import. Identify content fields, specifications and selection guidance that will not transfer automatically.
03
Verify source redirects, destination canonicals, selected products and market persistence. Test discontinued items and unavailable variants separately from ordinary products.
DIAGNOSE BEFORE CHANGING
Build mappings for observed direct and category-path product URLs, including suffixes and rewrites. Inventory useful layered-navigation destinations separately. Map store-view content and market availability to the proposed Shopify architecture.
The handoff should name the affected URL pattern, the observed output and the component that owns it. Include a working comparison page when possible. This keeps an individual content edit separate from a template rule that affects many destinations.
| Area | What to compare | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Category paths | Compare all known product access paths with the target product and collection structure. | Map legacy variants of a URL without creating chains. |
| Layered navigation | Inventory valuable attribute destinations and incidental combinations. | Preserve useful search destinations with supported target structures. |
| Store views | Document locale URLs, localized content and market relationships. | Validate the target market architecture before launch. |
| Workstream | Evidence | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory | Combine valuable landing pages, linked URLs, images, documents and current navigation. | Define which assets need preservation, replacement or retirement. |
| Destination mapping | Map each changed URL to the closest relevant new destination. | Avoid blanket redirects to the homepage or an unrelated category. |
| Content parity | Compare useful body content, specifications, media and internal links. | Make intentional changes explicit and recover accidental omissions. |
| Technical output | Check responses, redirects, canonical URLs, robots directives and sitemaps. | Resolve conflicting staging and production settings. |
| Conversion continuity | Test forms, checkout, phone links and analytics. | Preserve measurable business tasks through launch. |
| Launch ownership | Assign launch checks, issue owners and rollback criteria. | Monitor critical paths immediately and affected search groups over time. |
A Magento category-path product URL and a direct product URL may both lead to one item. The target mapping should resolve both known legacy paths to the appropriate new destination. If a filtered category also served a distinct buyer need, do not lose it simply because the target catalog uses a different taxonomy.
This is an illustrative planning scenario. Use a real URL inventory and documented business requirements to make the final mapping decisions.
Record the old URL, target URL, reason for the mapping, expected status and the owner of any exception. Test the complete chain from the old destination to the final page. Check for loops, unnecessary hops, irrelevant targets and destinations that are themselves unavailable or excluded.
Preserving a URL is useful only if the resulting page still serves its purpose. Compare the visible content, relevant product set, internal links and conversion path. Do not accept a successful response code as proof of content parity.
Before release, agree on the rollback threshold, responsible team and communication channel. At launch, verify the critical URLs, indexing controls, sitemaps, internal navigation and business actions. Retest representative edge cases, not just the homepage.
After launch, inspect the affected landing-page groups and retain the old-to-new mapping in reports. A new URL may not be processed immediately. Investigate technical failures promptly while distinguishing them from search processing, seasonality and unrelated campaign changes.
They can, but combining changes makes diagnosis harder. Record which URLs, content, templates and tracking behaviors change so the team can investigate issues.
Only when that category is a genuinely relevant replacement. Blanket redirects sacrifice relevance and may produce poor user experiences.
Treat redirects as a durable part of the move. Follow current search-engine guidance and keep useful old links working, especially where external references remain.

A QUESTION WORTH ANSWERING CLEARLY
A product import moves selected catalog data; it does not establish complete legacy URL coverage, collection purpose, market equivalence or content preservation. Treat it as one workstream within the migration. Validate the destination product model and redirect inventory before relying on imported records as launch-ready pages.
