WORKED EXAMPLE

WordPress SEO Audit: a practical implementation example

Illustrative scenario. This is an implementation example, not a reported Fuel client result.

An illustrative audit contains 12 service pages, a resource library and several taxonomy archives. A crawler labels hundreds of archives as thin, while two revenue-critical service pages point their canonicals at the homepage. The canonical finding has a reproducible template cause; the archive finding still needs a content-purpose decision. Give them separate tickets. A count of warnings is not a priority model, and the archive recommendation should not delete useful navigation into the resource library.

The decision to resolve

Audit output before recommending another plugin. If several plugins emit complementary schema entities, retain them; if they describe the same offer inconsistently, fix ownership. An archive should be retained or consolidated because of its purpose and content, not because it is an archive.

Evidence of a completed change

A completed finding should reproduce on a listed URL and specify the expected corrected output. The developer should be able to verify it without interpreting a generic crawler warning. Keep content opportunities separate from confirmed technical defects.

IMPLEMENTATION SEQUENCE

Implementation sequence and acceptance checks

01

Choose a representative sample

Include a service page, post, archive, custom post type and pagination. Add one known failure and one working comparison page so the audit can distinguish a template rule from an isolated edit.

02

Write a reproducible finding

Record the URL, observed output, expected behavior, owning plugin or template and affected page group. Attach the specific evidence that would change the recommendation.

03

Define completion before handoff

Ask the implementer to verify the changed template plus a control template on production. Keep technical acceptance separate from later changes in search impressions and qualified inquiries.

DIAGNOSE BEFORE CHANGING

Where the technical change belongs

Build the sample by template: core service page, blog post, taxonomy archive, custom post type and pagination. Compare emitted titles, canonicals, robots directives and linked destinations. Record the page builder and SEO plugin because the implementation ticket must identify the correct owner.

The handoff should name the affected URL pattern, the observed output and the component that owns it. Include a working comparison page when possible. This keeps an individual content edit separate from a template rule that affects many destinations.

Symptoms, decisions and verification

CheckWhat to look forDecision or next step
Template inventoryService pages, posts, categories, tags, author archives, search results and pagination can produce different outputs.Sample each template family and its important edge cases.
IndexabilityCheck response codes, robots directives and canonical output on production.Separate blocked access from duplicate selection and content-quality decisions.
Plugin ownershipThemes, SEO plugins and custom functions may emit overlapping metadata or structured data.Assign one owner for each field and test conflicts on staging.
Internal architectureImportant pages may be isolated while low-value archives receive many links.Map links to commercial intent and useful browsing paths.
Content usefulnessA technically valid page may still fail to answer the buyer question.Identify missing evidence, specifics, comparisons and next steps.
Conversion pathCheck forms, calls to action and mobile usability on organic landing pages.Tie fixes to observable user tasks and verified tracking.

Avoid the shortcut that hides the problem

Do not equate a plugin score with an SEO audit. Automated checks can surface issues, but they cannot establish commercial relevance, whether an archive deserves a search destination, or whether a recommendation is safe to deploy.

Questions about WordPress SEO Audit

Does an audit include implementation?

Only if the scope says so. Ask for a clear distinction between diagnosis, implementation, verification and ongoing monitoring.

Should every warning be fixed?

No. Prioritize by affected pages, user impact, business relevance and confidence in the diagnosis. Some warnings describe intentional behavior.

When is it worth bringing in a specialist?

Bring in help when the issue affects commercially important pages, spans several templates, or requires changes your team cannot confidently test. A useful first conversation includes example URLs, the symptoms, recent changes and who maintains the site.

A QUESTION WORTH ANSWERING CLEARLY

What should a WordPress audit deliver besides a spreadsheet?

A prioritized implementation backlog, an ownership map, a list of content decisions and a production acceptance set. Each recommendation should explain why it matters and how to verify it. Ask whether implementation, developer coordination and post-release checks are included; an audit document alone does not establish that the work will ship.
